Sony Nex-6, first impressions... I am using the Nex 6 with the standard "pancake" zoom since several weeks…
Purchase Considerations: I did purchase this camera because I was about to travel to Brazil, where I expected this camera to fill in for a bit of city shooting or and or as well in situations where I would not want to carry a larger, more conspicuous SLR type camera that screams gringo, foreigner, money and worst of all; rob me!
My other line of thought is to use this camera once diving/ underwater housings become available for it, in an amphibious way. Not so much strictly as a diving camera/ housing, but using it in many situations, where water, especially salt water could be harmful, to the camera. Nauticam I hope, will at some point come up with a suitable case that can be a lot more compact than a housing designed for a SLR style camera.
Other APS-C size sensor options: Before purchasing this camera I was looking for a large sensor in a small package. An other option I considered was the Fuji X-E1, but it was not available in time for me to take it to South America…
Operations: When you are shooting in sunny conditions a actual viewfinder is a big asset. The Nex-6 has a EVF built-in. To me it is also essential for any kind of sports shooting. The fact that the camera automatically senses when you look through it is a nice touch, much appreciated. I have played with the Nex-5 and not liked the controls mostly buried in a way too complicate menu structure. The new Nex-6 offers full manual control with a top dial as well as the selector wheel on the back. Even ISO settings can be changed with a press on the right hand side of the back selector wheel.
The autofocus is reasonably quick and I continue to explore some of the metering options available.
Software/ Processing/ Image quality: With the latest update of Adobe Lightroom (4.3), I can now also apply distortion correction to the raw images and yes, there is quite a bit of distortion at 16mm as well as some heavy vignetting. The 16.1 megapixel files look quite clean at 100 ISO and I believe even 3200 ISO is usable in a pinch.
Menu structure: It's not all gravy though, the menu structure takes some getting used to. Coming from Canon SLR's, it is too complicated and the fact that the menu changes back to the root menu every time is a hassle.
HD video files and photos are held in different folders and so HD video files have to be erased separately from the photo files. Overall I am happy with my purchase and there are many features I still need to explore. The application feature set I have jet to dig into… ____________________________________________________________________________________________ |

I got the bag for a couple of weeks now and used it quite a few times. It fit's a 5Dmk2 with a Canon 17-40 F/4.0, a flash, a 70-200 F/4.0, even a 50mm F/1.4 and lots of small items quite easily. And the price was right! I have not used the loop adjustments on both ends of the bag jet, nor have I used the built in waist belt... I find it to be just the right bag to do some street shooting in a city. The 2 buckles are the quick and easy way to close the bag or access the gear inside. Even with only one of 2 buckles secured it appears to stay closed safely. I also use the bag in addition to a camera backpack for spares and odds and ends that I do not want to check in; card reader, battery charger, remote release trigger, filters, you get the picture.
I purchased the Bag on my trip in Thailand, to compliment my camera back, something smaller less restrictive... Foto File produces a wide variety of camera bags...
